A Gathering of Strangers | Nabuurs&VanDoorn

Project type

Multi-media Installation

Date

2025

Location

A World of Water, Sainsbury Centre, Norwich, UK

A Gathering of Strangers exists of the following 3 components:

1/ A Gathering of Gods- 2025 – PLA 3D prints and globe

A Gathering of Gods explores cultural identity, appropriation and maritime symbolism, linking the lost land of Doggerland to the threat of sea level rise facing Tuvalu, Kiribati, the Cook Islands, and other Pacific nations. Addressing climate migration, adaptation and resilience, the installation addresses the risk posed to island communities and the urgent need for global cooperation in confronting the climate crisis.

2/ The Stranger Case – 2024 – Six channel HD video

Exploring displacement, transformation and environmental change, The Stranger Case imagines Doggerland, the prehistoric land lost to rising seas. Filmed at twilight, light and dark merge, suspending reality and suggesting magic. Inspired by migration histories, the film reflects on shifting landscapes and the growing impact of climate-driven loss.

3/ Unknown maker - Fisherman’s god - 1775/1825 - Wood (from Sainsbury Centre’s collection)

This rare Polynesian sculpture is one of only seven surviving examples, commonly known as a ‘Fishermen’s God’. It was placed on canoes, where offerings were made for a succesful catch. It embodies strength, fertility and spiritual presence.
