Death is the permanent companion of living- and by no means the sole preserve of the “live fast, die young” generation. Nowadays mortality salience is a method through which the impact of fear-based emotional appeals is strengthened by reminding individuals of their own mortality. Nearly all humans actions are motivated by the awareness of one’s own mortality. Drawing attention to one’s mortality prompts profound impact on individuals attitudes and behaviors. This perception should in turn increase one’s motivation to develop a means to “manage” and thereby, reduce the perceived threat. A liberal interpretation of the vanitas concept is one characteristic of the contemporary use of the skull and bones. Another is that the artists are reflecting specifically on their own choice to live under the constant threat of the unforeseeable catastrophe. Aware of a possible loss of position because the higher a ship rides upon the crest, the greater the danger of plunging into a deep through.
