From Milan to Tahiti | Nabuurs&VanDoorn
This presentation started with a residency in Milan in 2019 when Nabuurs&VanDoorn took part in the VIR Viafarini-in-residence program to develop Zwischenlandschaften 4. A project rooted in the history of the city and in open dialogue with the most recent evolution of its urban and social fabric. During their residency in Milan, they developed a very inclusive and mindful approach, connecting their artistic practice inside and outside the so-called art world. Zwischenlandschaften 4 represents an artistic exploration realized in Milan more than thirty years after Lucius Burckhardt’s social experiment The Voyage to Tahiti performed in 1987 near Kassel and in September 1988 in Bovisa for the opening of the XVII Triennale in Milan. The original action took inspiration from the journey that captain James Cook, and ethnologist Georg Forster made in 1773 across the Pacific. Nabuurs&VanDoorn's work often deals with collective memory of places and its genius loci, as well as the meditative quality that lies behind the everyday.
