Morphing Light | Nabuurs&VanDoorn

MORPHING LIGHT (2014) presents fractal patterns that articulate and highlight the four elements (earth, fire, water and air). MORPHING LIGHT consists of 4 videos, where images of distorted elemental landscapes are edited with a mesmerizing effect. Time disappears and becomes a warped loop. The artists question what goes beyond science?

In 2013, Nabuurs and Van Doorn investigated online rumours of a lizard King living deep underground from where it controls domination over Earth using magic that involves the four elements. The artists travelled to locations in Portugal, where in history the monster was spotted, and recorded on site fragments of the landscape in which they found traces of the antique elements; Water at Boca do Inferno in Cascais, Fire at Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga, Earth at the Shrine of Fatima and Air at Bussaco Palace in Luso. To edit the footage Nabuurs and Van Doorn learned how to carve precious stones and used this technique to cut and paste their footage, catching nothing but antique light.
