The Wash Away Island | Nabuurs&VanDoorn
The sublime is the dimension that goes beyond the aesthetic contemplation, toward the extra-sensory and cognitive search for the idea, for the unknown, ineffable, unimaginable, non- perceivable, and so forth. The sublime is often taken metaphorically as a synonym for metaphysics in art. But in fact, the sublime is knowledge about infinity, or about the borderline between knowledge and infinity. The sublime is something that is happening in its irreversibility. Art is a procedure of truth that unfolds as the transmitting of the infinite into the finite, and where the goal is the infinite, the idea, the evental.
During the procedure of the creation of the wash- away island, bottles containing milk are shaken out into the river, questions coming from institutions reverberate unanswered through a megaphone, the empty bottle becomes message in a bottle, buckets filled with sand go from hand-to-hand before an island arises in the artificial lake, the questions in the bottles are stuck in the sand of the island, when the water rises an upward pressure gives the bottles a natural power which destroys the island, the bottles are freed and the questions float away from the institution into the world.
